Ohio Insurance Agents Association Recognizes Wallace & Turner with Community Service Award

Ohio Insurance Agents Association (OIA) recognized Wallace & Turner as the recipient of the Community Service Award 2024. The award honors an independent insurance agent or agency that has provided extraordinary service within their community. This is defined by demonstrating commitment to their local neighbors by going above and beyond in volunteering time and enthusiasm to causes close to their heart.

OIA acknowledged Wallace & Turner for living by the agency motto "Take care of the community, and they'll take care of you” by expanding our impact across education, hunger relief, the arts and environmental stewardship. Some examples of this include Wallace & Turner’s longtime support of Second Harvest Food Bank of Clark, Champaign & Logan Counties through grants and events like the Empty Bowls fundraiser; backing initiatives such as Clark State Community College’s Champaign City Scholars program and Catholic Central School’s Emerald Evening Auction, helping to raise over $7 million for school expansions.

Each year, the recipient of the Community Service Award selects a charity to receive a donation in the amount of $2,500 from OIA on their behalf. Wallace & Turner selected Project Woman, a nationally accredited non-profit domestic violence and crisis center in Springfield, Ohio to receive that donation.

Patrick Field Honored with Second Harvest Food Bank "Patrick Field Volunteer of the Year Award"

Wallace & Turner President Patrick Field was honored with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Clark, Champaign & Logan Counties “Patrick Field Volunteer of the Year Award” in recognition of his leadership, stewardship and strong commitment to volunteerism within our community.

Patrick has been a Second Harvest Board member for the past six years and will be retiring from the Board at the end of December 2024. Looking back on Patrick's time with Second Harvest, one of his most impactful contributions was serving as a key member of the Board during the organization's transition from Catholic Charities to an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Patrick was an integral part of this success!

His impact has left a lasting mark on Second Harvest and the organization will continue to honor his legacy by annually recognizing an outstanding community volunteer.

Sewer Backup Risks During the Holidays

Sewer backups are a common and often costly problem during the holiday season. Contributing factors include overloading drains with food debris (especially leftover grease) or excessive use of the plumbing system by visiting guests. In addition, certain regions are entering rainy season as the dry, sunny months of September through early November have come to a close—an increased risk for sewer backups or sump pump failures.

Sewer backups can occur for a variety of reasons, including clogged pipes, heavy rainfall, or faulty drainage systems. During the holidays, the additional strain on plumbing systems can also contribute to these issues. 

Sewer backup is typically defined as water that backs up or overflows from a sewer, drain, or sump pump. If this coverage isn’t included in your policy, you may find yourself without protection when a sewer backup occurs.

Water Backup Insurance

Water backup insurance can help cover the costs of repairing damage to your home caused by sewer, septic, or drain backups. It can also pay to replace damaged property, such as flooring, furniture, and personal items. This coverage is typically purchased as an endorsement to your existing policy, often in increments of $5,000. Homeowners with finished basements face the greatest risk and may want to consider higher coverage limits to ensure adequate protection.

Partner Otto Larson presented “Lines of Insurance and How They Affect Your Clients” to the Clark County Bar Association on November 7, 2024. His talked examined a range of coverage lines, including property, general liability, cyber and data, crime, and more. Otto also explained available risk management solutions such as OSHA compliance, claims management, risk financing and human resources management. A lively discussion ensued around current trends and hot topics as well as claim examples like failure to perform, metal theft and social engineering fraud. Do You Need Insurance With a Learner's Permit? U.S. News & World Report Interviews Deece Catanzaro

Even with a learner’s permit, you are required to have car insurance in most states. Typically, a learner's permit driver can be added to a household member's existing policy, but they may need to purchase their own policy. In an interview with U.S. News & World Report, Producer Deece Catanzaro explained the factors that determine how much car insurance a permit driver needs and coverage costs.

A car insurance policy must meet state minimum liability insurance requirements; however, a permit driver may consider purchasing more than the minimum required. 

“Given the rising costs of medical care and emergency services, it’s advisable to carry higher [than the minimum] limits,” Deece commented. “For example, a care flight can cost around $30,000, which can quickly exceed a $25,000 per-person limit, leaving additional expenses to be paid out of pocket – potentially leading to financial strain or bankruptcy for many individuals.”

The exact cost of coverage for a driver with a learner’s permit will depend on the driver’s age, permanent residence, type of car and more.  

“There are a lot of factors that go into setting the rate,” Catanzaro said. “However, if all other things are equal, if a person with the same driving record and insurance score from the same city elects to have the same policy limits, the permit driver will likely pay a higher premium than the licensed driver."

How Does Your Credit Score Affect Your Car Insurance Rate? Fox Money Interviews Otto Larson

Insurers in certain states use a credit-based insurance score (CBIS) to approve or deny auto insurance policy applications, renew existing policies and set rates for customers. In an interview with Fox Business – Money, Partner Otto Larson explained how credit-based insurance scores are used to set rates and why your score is not the only factor that impacts how much you pay.  

“The idea is that a person with better credit is essentially more financially responsible, and that may be correlated to safer driving and fewer insurance claims,” said Otto.

While credit-based insurance scores may be weighed heavily by some companies, they may be less of a factor elsewhere.

“Each company has its own pricing model,” Otto added. “Credit is not the sole factor. There are more variables that go into car insurance pricing.”

When insurance companies review credit, this is considered a “soft” inquiry. Otto noted that people shouldn’t have to worry about that hurting their score.
